Graduate Funding in Classics

The following graduate funding opportunities in Classics are available through the Faculty, and through the University. These are just the main sources of funding available, not an exhaustive list, and there are also a range of additional funds available for activities associated with research, such as travel, conferences etc.

For a fuller listing and further details on everything, see:

1. Faculty of Classics

(a) AHRC

Under the AHRC block grant system 2/3 MPhil and 5/6 PhD studentships are available in the Classics Faculty. These are for home or EU students, across all the disciplines within Classics. Although for EU students the awards provide fees only, these are supplemented by University bursary awards which contribute towards living expenses. Applications are made through the GRADSAF, but must be made by the relevant deadline.

(b) Seven Pillars Studentship

This studentship is awarded annually to a well qualified MPhil student in the Classics Faculty, with preference being given to a candidate electing to work in the field of Art or Archaeology. All those who apply in a relevant subject area will be considered automatically for this award.

(c) John Chadwick Studentship

From time to time the Faculty of Classics is able to offer a studentship of £6,000 to a well qualified MPhil student planning to work in the field of Classical Philology and Linguistics. All those who apply in a relevant subject area will be considered automatically in each year that the studentship is available.

(d) Faculty Teaching and Access Bursaries

A number of Teaching and Access Bursaries are available each year for graduate students in the Classics Faculty, the competition for these bursaries is held over the summer.

2. University

(a) Cambridge International Scholarship Scheme (CISS)

The University offers, via the Cambridge Trusts, a number of Scholarships to Overseas Students undertaking PhDs. There is no separate application form, but you need to indicate on your University application form that you are applying for these Scholarships, and you need to meet the relevant deadline. The awards are made on a competitive basis to those applicants considered by their departments to be the most outstanding.

(b) Cambridge Home and EU Scholarship Scheme (CHESS)

This covers a range of MPhil and PhD studentship and bursary schemes, which are available to UK and EU applicants. All eligible applicants for MPhil/PhD will be automatically considered for if they have applied for admission by the relevant deadline. There is no separate application form. The first round of assessment happens at Faculty level and Faculties nominate and rank selected students to the competition, held at the Board of Graduate Studies.
