Graduate Funding in Classics
The following graduate funding opportunities in Classics are available through the Faculty, and through the University. These are just the main sources of funding available, not an exhaustive list, and there are a range of additional funds available to current graduate students for activities associated with research, such as travel, conferences etc.
For a fuller listing and further details on everything, see the University’s Graduate Admissions website:

and in particular the University’s CamFunds site, which has a ‘look-up’ function allowing you to identify the various possibilities available in your particular circumstances:

1. Faculty of Classics
(a) AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) awards
Under the AHRC block grant system we anticipate that one MPhil studentship and 5/6 PhD studentships will be available in the Classics Faculty in 2013. These are for home or EU students, across all the disciplines within Classics. Although for EU students the awards provide fees only, it is very likely that these will be supplemented by University or Faculty bursary awards which contribute towards living expenses. Applications are submitted through the University’s on-line GRADSAF application form, but must be made by the relevant deadline (11 January 2013). You will need to indicate on your GRADSAF form that you are applying for an AHRC award. For further details see our AHRC awards competition 2013 page.
(b) Craven Studentship, Prendergast Studentship, Henry Arthur Thomas Studentship, Charles Oldham Classical Scholarship, George Charles Winter Warr Scholarship
These studentships and scholarships are awarded annually to well qualified MPhil or PhD students in the Classics Faculty. The amounts awarded are variable: at the maximum they may provide full fees and maintenance for a UK/EU MPhil student (approx. £16,000). Additional bursaries may also be available. All those who apply by 11 January 2013 will be considered automatically for these studentships and scholarships, and awards are normally made in the summer when candidates’ final undergraduate or master’s examination results are known. See here for information.
(c) Seven Pillars Studentship
This studentship is awarded annually to a well qualified MPhil student in the Classics Faculty, with preference being given to a candidate electing to work in the field of Art or Archaeology. All those who apply in a relevant subject area by 11 January 2013 will be considered automatically for this studentship, and awards are normally made in the summer, when candidates’ final examination results are known.
(d) John Chadwick Studentship
From time to time the Faculty of Classics is able to offer a studentship of £6,000 to a well qualified MPhil student planning to work in the field of Classical Philology and Linguistics. All those who apply in a relevant subject area will be considered automatically in each year that the studentship is available, and awards are normally made in the summer, when candidates’ final examination results are known.
NB: the Chadwick Studentship will not be awarded for the academic year 2013-14.
(e) Graduate Teaching Assistant Bursaries
A number of Teaching Bursaries are available each year for graduate students in the Classics Faculty; the competition for these bursaries is held over the summer.
2. University
(a) Gates Cambridge Scholarships
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are available to outstanding young men and women from outside the United Kingdom who wish to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject offered at the University of Cambridge. Scholarships are awarded on intellectual ability, leadership potential, social commitment and a good match between the candidate and the University of Cambridge. There is no separate application form, but you will need to indicate on your on-line University GRADSAF application that you are applying for these awards, and you need to meet the relevant deadline (16 October 2012 for US citizens based in the USA; 4 December 2012 for all other eligible candidates). You will also need to provide a personal reference in addition to your two academic references.
In drafting your application, you should bear in mind that candidates for these awards are assessed on the basis of further criteria in addition to academic merit, e.g. leadership potential and social commitment. Applications in Classics for the Gates scholarship scheme may be discussed informally, before being submitted, with Prof. Simon Goldhill: sdg1001@cam.ac.uk
(b) Cambridge International Scholarship Scheme (CISS)

Some partially funded awards will also be made by the Trusts to candidates who are not successful in obtaining a fully funded CISS award. For more details see here.

Some one-year awards are also offered to Overseas candidates for the MPhil by the Trusts.
