Oxbridge Classics Open Day

The next annual Oxbridge Classics Open Day will take place in Cambridge in spring 2014 (more details about the date to follow). It is a chance to find out more about Classics in general, but also the specific degree programmes at the two universities in particular.

The day will include:
a.)    Talks by admissions tutors
b.)    Subject taster lectures
c.)    Lunch in a college
d.)    Tours of Cambridge
e.)    A chance to talk to undergraduates and academics.

Both individuals and school groups are welcome. For further details see here.

University Open Days

The Faculty of Classics contributes to a series of regional Oxbridge open days each March. To find the event in your area click here.

The University hosts two big open days in July each year. For prospective Classicists, there will be a tour of the Faculty building and the Museum of Classical Archaeology , plus a one hour subject talk from a senior member of the Faculty. For more information, please see the main University website.

Free Taster Day in Latin and Classics

Saturday 22nd June 2013

The aim of this ‘taster day’ is to give prospective applicants for a Classics Degree at the University of Cambridge the opportunity to experience teaching in a University environment and to decide whether learning Latin is something that they would enjoy.

The day is open to anyone who has never studied Latin at School or 6th Form College.

The day is FREE. At the moment we are placing no limit on numbers. (If a limit has to be imposed, we shall accept students in the order in which they book.)

Venue: Faculty of Classics, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 9DA. Light refreshments will be provided. For lunch, the nearest shop is about seven minutes walk away; but students are welcome (and encouraged) to bring a packed lunch.

Up to 50 travel bursaries of up to £50.00 are available on a first come, first served basis. To apply, please provide details of the cost of your travel arrangements. For those travelling by car, bursaries will be provided only against the cost of petrol. All claims by recipients of bursaries will need to be accompanied by receipts.

Sixth Form Study Day

There is an annual Sixth Form Study Day in late September, concentrating on a theme or set text. Further details of the 2013 day will be advertised nearer the time.

College Open Days

Most of the colleges also hold their own open days, information about which can be found here and on individual colleges' websites. If you have specific questions about a particular college, it is a good idea to email the relevant Director of Studies.

School Visits

The Faculty is very keen to organise visits by academics to schools, both to give talks on classical themes and to explain more about the Classics course. A list of talks is available here. Please email schools.liaison@classics.cam.ac.uk in the first instance.

Ideas or Questions?

If there is anything that you would like to see us doing or any information that we can give you, then do get in touch: schools.liaison@classics.cam.ac.uk.

The Faculty's Access and Outreach Officer is Professor Stephen Oakley and the Schools Liaison Officer is Dr Nigel Spivey. We look forward to hearing from you.
