An Introductory Guide to the Faculty of Classics
Welcome to the Faculty of Classics. We hope that you find this guide helpful as you settle into your new role.
1. Overview of the Faculty
The Faculty is housed in a purpose-built building in
Stage 1, so called because it was the first part to be built, contains the main entrance, adjoining the Library and Enquiries Office. Stage 2 is accessed from the first floor of Stage 1 by a linking bridge. Stage 3 adjoins Stage 2 at the far end of the building. Both Stage 2 and Stage 3 have their own ground-floor entrances.

Normal working hours for administrative staff are 8.30 am to 5.00 pm. The
4. Postal Arrangements
Internal Mail
Internal mail, i.e. mail to other Departments and Faculties within the University, can be sent via the University Messenger Service (UMS). Internal mail leaves the Faculty at 9.00 am and 2.00 pm each day. It is not expected that staff will use this service for personal mail.
External Mail
Mail to be franked will be sent second class, unless otherwise requested. Envelopes containing printed matter, i.e. published material, to be sent overseas should be marked as such, as this is cheaper to send than other documents. External mail leaves the Faculty at 4.45 pm Monday to Thursday and 3.45 pm on Fridays.
Trays marked ‘UMS’ and ‘Franked Mail’ can be found just inside the Enquiries Office.
5. Tea and Coffee Arrangements
There is a staff kitchen on the ground floor in G.06. Sachets of tea and coffee can be bought for 35p, although the majority of Support Staff bring in their own. Milk is freely available in the kitchen fridge.

7. University Card
All staff are issued with a University Card and this will be arranged for you by the Faculty Card Rep (the Chief Secretary). The card gives you out-of-hours access to the
8. The Sidgwick Site
The Sidgwick Site houses the majority of the Arts & Humanities Departments and Faculties; see a map of the site at Appendix B. Cafes can be found at the Buttery, the basement of the Law Faculty, and the Alison Richard Building.
9. Car Parking
Car Parking on the Sidgwick Site is very limited. Parking badges are allocated on an annual basis at the beginning of Michaelmas Term, with application forms sent out during August.
10. The Local Area
The Faculty is approximately a 10 minute walk from the city centre, where you will find excellent shops, including an array of individual shops as well as High Street chains, branches of all the major banks, a central post office and an abundance of eateries.
Newnham Post Office is only a 5 minute walk (ask any member of staff for directions) and nearby pubs and restaurants include the Granta (Pub), Bella Italia (Italian) and Sala Thong (Thai) which can be found by the river on Newnham Road.
11. IT Support
How to get an e-mail account
You will be given a form on which to apply for a University e-mail account prior to starting work at the Faculty. Once up and running, any problems or questions should be directed to the Faculty Computer Officer.
Raven password
Some areas of the University Website are accessible to Raven password holders only. Instructions on how to obtain a Raven password can be found at http://www.cam.ac.uk/cs/docs/faq/n5.html
Greek fonts – Unicode for Greek on PCs and Macs
If you are required to use Greek fonts, you will be taught how to do this by the Computer Officer.
12. The Classical Faculty Library
The Faculty Library is housed on the ground floor of the Faculty building. Opening hours are:
Full Term
Monday - Friday 9.00am - 7.00pm
Saturday 9.00am - 6.00pm
Vacation
Monday - Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm
(Not open on Saturdays)
The library is closed at Christmas and New Year, and on Good Friday and Easter Monday. It is open on Bank Holidays in full term.

13. The Museum of Classical Archaeology
The Cast Gallery is housed on the first floor of the

14. How and when you are paid
Salaries for all staff are normally paid monthly (some temporary staff are paid weekly) on the 25th of the month. Payment is made directly into your Bank or Building Society account. If you work part-time throughout the year, you will be paid a salary based on your weekly hours. If you work for part of the year only, e.g. term-time, your salary will be based on the number of hours worked over the year and you will receive this salary in twelve monthly instalments.
15. Annual Leave
Staff are entitled to 36 days leave per year, including 8 Bank Holidays.
16. Probationary Period
The majority of University posts are subject to an initial period of probation. You will be informed of the probationary period for your particular role on receipt of your contract.
17. Staff Reviews and Development Plans (Appraisals)
The majority of staff are reviewed every two years. Some categories of staff will be appraised annually. You’ll be notified of the arrangements by your line manager. The purpose of the reviews is to enhance work effectiveness and to facilitate career development.
