The Faculty of Classics welcomes academic visitors, and is happy to accept applications for Official Visitor status in the Faculty. This entitles visitors to use the Faculty building out-of-hours, and in particular to use and to borrow from the Faculty library. It also entitles visitors to wireless internet access in the Faculty. Visitors will be in a position to apply for a University ID card and on that basis to apply for admission to the University Library. There is no entitlement to a University email address, or to the internal Raven password. Visitors pay for their own photocopying: the Faculty photocopier is located in the Library.
There are two categories of Official Visitor:
(1) Visiting Scholars hold a doctorate, and usually hold a teaching position in a university elsewhere. For applications received from 1st October 2008, Visiting Scholars will pay a fee of £500 per Term. Visitors who come for less than a Term pay £50 per week. The fee is inclusive of VAT. Visitors who are suffering hardship may apply for exemption from the fee to the Chairman of the Faculty. Complete the application form, (which must be sent at least one month before the start of the proposed visit) attach it to an email together with a short Curriculum Vitae and a .jpeg image, and send the whole to: visitor.applications@classics.cam.ac.uk.
We also need two signed references to be sent by the referees themselves to this same email address, by the same deadline. It is the applicant's responsibility to ask the referees to send references: the Faculty will not contact referees to ask them to write, and will not consider applications until the references have arrived.
(2) Visiting Graduate Students are students currently undertaking a course of postgraduate study in a university elsewhere. If you wish to come to Cambridge as a Visiting Graduate Student, for up to one year, you need to request Visiting Graduate Student status in the Faculty of Classics. There is a fee of £500 per term (£250 if the stay is less than 4 weeks in length). Complete the application form, (which must be sent at least one month before the start of the proposed visit) attach it to an email together with a short Curriculum Vitae and a .jpeg image and send the whole to: visitor.applications@classics.cam.ac.uk

The University normally does not permit Visiting Students to continue for more than one year without registering for a Cambridge qualification (further details may be found here).
No formal arrangements for the supervision or mentoring of visiting students are made by the Faculty. These are arrangements for those registered for Cambridge degrees. Of course, there are many informal arrangements, but these are organised on an entirely one-to-one basis between individual visiting students and senior members of the Faculty. On the whole senior members are very generous with their time, but this is not something which the Faculty organises, nor should visiting students have any expectation of supervision or mentoring during their time in Cambridge.
If you require a visa to come to the UK, please first check the UK Border Agency's website for the rules that apply to your own situation: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/
You will need to include in your email to the Faculty a full and explicit list of what the Faculty will need to say in its letter of acceptance. Please note that the office is very busy and that it may be difficult or even impossible to issue a revised letter within the period required for your application to be processed
Accommodation: The University has an Accommodation Service that may be able to help you. Please visit their webpage: www.accommodation.cam.ac.uk
Visiting Scholars who have been here prior to 31 December 2007 will need to submit a completed application form, two references, a CV and a jpeg image of a recent photograph. If your first visit was after 1 January 2008 you do not need to fill in the form as your details are on file from the previous visit. Please just send an email to chair@classics.cam.ac.uk with details of your new visit.
