How to find e-books

The e-books provide online versions of complete texts, allowing readers to search, print and download sections of works (subject to the usual copyright restrictions).  Additionally, some platforms offer features such as dictionary checking and citation export; electronic notes and bookmarks can also be made by creating a personal account.

The ebooks@cambridge site provides a search box for finding ebooks, and instructions on how to access them, including downloading to mobile devices.

E-books are also searchable directly via LibrarySearch. Electronic resources are indicated in the catalogue record.  To limit to ebooks only either use the ebooks@cambridge search or enter your search terms and add format:ebook to limit to ebooks.

New electronic books do not appeare in searches on the Newton Catalogue. So please use the ebooks@cambridge/LibrarySearch options.  Some Classics ebooks are linked from the print records in Newton below the classmark. These links will take you to the ebook or to the electronic record entry where the link will provide both on and off campus access.

SOME USEFUL EBOOK COLLECTIONS

Cambridge Companions:

The Cambridge Companions is a fully-searchable online resource. It can be searched by theme or subject. The sub-collections of the Cambridge Companions in Literature and Classics, and the Cambridge Companions in Philosophy, Religion and Culture will be of particular interest to Classicists.

For off-campus access, search the Newton catalogue for a Cambridge Companion title and then click on the full-text access link.  This will open a Raven/Shibboleth box for logging in.  Accessing the Cambridge Companion site direct and clicking on login will not open the Raven/Shibboleth box, and you will not be able to login.

Cambridge Histories:

The Cambridge Histories are available online, and are quick and easy to search, by subject, by series or by keyword.  Series that may interest Classicists include: The Cambridge Ancient Histories, The Cambridge History of Classical Literature, The Cambridge History of Greek and Roman Warfare, The Cambridge History of Hellenistic Philosophy, The Cambridge History of the Byzantine Empire and The Cambridge History of Later Greek and Early Medieval Philosophy.

Cambridge Books Online:

Over 2500 ebooks versions of CUP books in the Cambridge Library Collection.  Available both on and off campus.

Oxford Scholarship Online

Provides access to the full text of over 2500 books published by Oxford University Press, including Classical Studies.

Copying and printing restrictions

The full-text e-books in our collection are protected by copyright laws, and are subject to the terms and conditions of fair use in the same way as printed works.  It is your responsibility to make sure you stay within them; for example you may only copy up to 5% or one whole chapter (whichever is greater) from a book.  Before copying or printing please refer to the information given on the suppliers' websites or at the University Library webpage.  Use of e-books is monitored and publishers will withdraw access if evidence of copyright abuse is detected.
