The Temple of Apollo at Bassai is in a part of Greece called Arcadia. It is famed for its long sculptural frieze discovered in 1811 and now in the British Museum. The name Arcadia suggests an idyllic pastoral world, but the area is remote, inhospitable and prone to earthquakes. Artists too, most famously Poussin, have been drawn to the phrase Et in Arcadia Ego and its association with death, mystery and nostalgia.
