Mary Beard wins Classical Association Prize

9 April 2013
The prize, awarded by the UK's largest classics society, celebrates contributions to the public understanding of classics.

Since 1903 the Classical Association has promoted Classics in Britain, and nowadays holds an annual spring conference. At the conference dinner, a prize of £5000 is awarded to someone who has made a particular contribution to outreach work in classics. This year's recipient is Cambridge professor Mary Beard.

In her acceptance speech, Prof. Beard paid tribute to the cohesion of Classics from the most fundamental linguistic research to public engagement on broad cultural issues. She has written this blog post with more details about the award and her speech.

The award was presented by fellow Cambridge professor Robin Osborne, who has been the President of the CA this year. His presidential lecture to the conference focused on the wide-ranging intellectual benefits of a classical education, particularly through being constantly forced to address gaps in the sources.
