Professor Mary Beard has won one of two Wolfson Literary Prizes for 2008 for her book 'Pompeii: The Life of a Roman Town'.
This prestigious award has such luminaries as Moses Finley, Simon Schama, Antonia Fraser and Barry Cunliffe amongst its past winners.
The Prizes were established in 1972 and are awarded annually to promote and encourage standards of excellence in the writing of history for the general public. In order to be considered, books should be "...scholarly but accessible to the lay reader."
The other 2008 winner is Margaret McGowan, with 'Dance in the Renaissance.'
