Decree Relief
Part of a public record of a treaty.
This fragmentary relief records an alliance between Athens and city states in the Peloponnese. Only the lower section of the sculptured panel and the upper part of the inscription survive.
The figures represent Zeus seated to the right and Athena, patron of Athens, leaning on a spear to the left. The central figure is again a goddess, perhaps a personification of the city states.
The lettering is typical of the mid fourth century BCE. The inscription names Molon as archon (chief magistrate), enabling us to date it accurately
