Herm of a Greek General
Also known as the Pastoret Head.
This is a Roman version of a Greek original dating from about 400 BCE. At that time, military men were moving closer to the centre of political life in Athens, and this general is given the characteristics of an aristocrat: idealised features and long hair. So it perhaps represents a general from the Peloponnesian Wars without quite being the portrait of a particular person.
The head is mounted on a square pillar, and the original of this cast is heavily restored
