Previous Projects

My recent Marie Curie Project, titled ‘Spaces through time. Transformations of Roman Identity in Rome: the Roman Forum from the earliest settlement to the fall of the Empire’ (MC IEF n. 628549), focused on the study of the interrelationship between topographical and social space in the Roman Forum. I developed a new methodology to analyse urban space as interrelation between topographical space and social space using the GIS to navigate and analyses archaeological, geological, literary, epigraphic and iconographic sources.

My Marie Curie project builds on my necessity to upgrade topographical studies to the new theoretical framework (the ‘spatial turn’) and on my Ph.D. at the Department of Science of Antiquity, Sapienza University of Rome. This was an inter- and multidisciplinary project combining archaeology, history, geo-morphology for a systematic study of the Roman Forum and Velabrum area between the Iron Age and the Trajan Period. My PhD constituted also the basis of my wider work on the reconstruction of the development of 8th region ‘Forum Romanum Magnum’.

From 1996 to 2014 I was Field Director of one of the most long-lasting and important excavation of the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza, a Roman urban excavation on the north slope of the Palatine Hill in Rome. This excavation investigated a 100 ha stratigraphic deposit between the 12th cent. BC and the 14th cent. AD.
