Faculty of Classics

James Warren, Chair of the Faculty Board, Faculty of Classics

James Warren, Professor of Ancient Philosophy and Fellow of Corpus Christi College took over as Chair of the Faculty Board on 1 January 2022.

James will provide strategic leadership and help to guide the Faculty’s research, teaching and access and outreach activities over the next 3 years.

Speaking about the role, James said: “This is an exciting and challenging time for the Faculty as it continues its work to widen access to the subject and offer a rich and challenging course for people with different levels of prior exposure to Classics, Latin, and Greek.  We are still working under the difficult conditions imposed by the pandemic but I hope very soon we will recover more of the face-to-face interactions that fuel much of the intellectual endeavour and enjoyment of our shared interests in the Faculty.”

James attended a comprehensive school and then was an undergraduate student in Classics at Clare College, where he took the Intensive Greek course.  He stayed at Clare for his postgraduate work before spending two years as a Research Fellow at Magdalene College.  James took up a Fellowship at Corpus Christi College on his appointment as a University Lecturer in 2001.  James teaches in both the Philosophy and Classics Triposes. His research interests include Presocratic philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, and Hellenistic philosophy and his publications range across metaphysics, philosophy of mind and moral psychology, ethics, and political philosophy.

James Clackson, Professor of Comparative Philology and a former Chair of the Faculty Board, commented: “I am thrilled that James will be our next Chair.  He will provide caring leadership in these challenging times, as well as wisdom and wit.”
