Goats: Born to be Wild
A temporary display curated by Michael Loy, in Bay C
Artists from parts of ancient Greece used to decorate their pottery with pictures of goats. This ‘Wild Goat Style’ has fascinated scholars for years, at how delicately these goats graze, walk, or gambol across the ceramic. They leap and bound in long lines, majestically and gracefully jumping between flowers and geometric shapes. These goats were born to be wild!
This temporary display showcases pottery from the museum’s sherd collection, and puts the spotlight on pieces painted in the ‘Wild Goat Style’. Explore the fascinating stories that these objects can tell us about the rugged Mediterranean landscapes, and about how the goods once held inside these pots were traded far from the shores of ancient Greece.
Goats: Born to be Wild is part of our Grads Curate programme, showcasing research from the Faculty of Classics' graduate students.
