The Faculty of Classics is delighted to announce the establishment of the Brian Leech Memorial Fund. The Fund comes about thanks to a generous donation by Emma Gleave, and is made in memory of her late father, Brian Leech. Brian Leech had a long and successful career as both barrister and judge. He also greatly enjoyed classical studies – with a life-long passion for ancient Greek and Latin languages.
The purpose of the Brian Leech Memorial Fund is to support undergraduates and postgraduates in the Faculty of Classics, and to enrich their student experience. First, the Fund will enable the Faculty to run an annual, fully subsidised, staff-led trip to Classical lands for our students, integrated within our BA and/or MPhil. teaching programme. Second, the Fund will provide bursaries to support both BA (four-year) and MPhil. students. Third, the Fund will support the Faculty’s access and outreach activities, helping the Faculty to realise its aim of further diversifying the student body of the future.
James Warren, Chair of the Faculty Board, said: ‘The Brian Leech Fund is a hugely exciting initiative within the Faculty of Classics. It will help us further our objective of recruiting the very best students, regardless of their background, while also enriching their studies at Cambridge. The Brian Leech Fund comes about at a time when Classics – and other Arts and Humanities subjects – are increasingly dependent on philanthropic support: we are hugely grateful to Emma and her family for helping to sustain our unique record in Classics education and research’.
