The Museum of Classical Archaeology may be small in comparison to some other Cambridge museums, but did you know we have well over 15,000 objects in our collection? Right now, we're undertaking an inventory of all those artefacts: from casts to squeezes, from sherds to pots to bronze surgical instruments to a little terracotta figure of a rabbit, we're counting them all and making sure they're in the right places.
All of this means that we and our lovely volunteers are taking a very close, hands-on look at all of our objects - and we're finding some real gems. Our temporary display celebrates them as soon as we find them. We're also tweeting and facebooking our finds in real time.
We're expecting the inventory process to take about two years. While we're inventorying, we're also going to be doing some repacking and relabelling, as well as identifying any pressing conservation issues. In short, we're working hard.
The next step will be to improve our catalogues, and ultimately make information about and associated with our collections more accessible to you, the public.
