This conference brings together literary and cultural analysis of Greek epic poems from the Roman imperial era (ca. 1st - 6th centuries CE), reading these texts against one another, setting them in their cultural, literary and political contexts and mapping out broader critical frameworks for understanding Greek imperial didactic and narrative epic poetry. Topics of discussion will include Christianisation, gender, the codification of knowledge, contact with non-Greek cultures, generic boundaries and the social value of epic.
