Classics Beyond Borders Collaboration

The Faculty’s ‘Classics Beyond Borders’ collaboration with the University of Ghana continues to forge connections between the two institutions. 

In September 2023, Frisbee Sheffield, James Warren, and Yfke van der Heijden (a current PhD student) travelled to Ghana to present work at a conference on ‘Plato on the nature and value of community’.

The meeting was attended by scholars from Ghana, Germany, and the UK and involved two days of presentations and discussions which we hope will lead to a continued exchange of ideas.  The University of Ghana has a long history of excellent work in Classics and Philosophy and a large number of postgraduate research students working in those areas. 

Outside the university library, named after D. M. Balme, Aristotle scholar and first Principal of the University of the Gold Coast, now the University of Ghana.

The Faculty in Cambridge is currently helping with their provision of teaching in Latin and ancient Greek language and the visit also included time to make plans for extending and developing that programme.  

Outside the conference, the visitors from Cambridge enjoyed the generous hospitality of their hosts, including a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to celebrate Founder’s Day on 21 September.
