The Faculty is very sad to report that our dear colleague Professor Patricia (Pat) Easterling has died, at the age of 92. She was Fellow of Newnham College from 1958 to 1987 and Professor of Greek at University College London from 1987 to 1994, when she returned to Cambridge as the 36th (and first female) Regius Professor of Greek. She was elected Honorary Fellow of Newnham in 1987 and Fellow of the British Academy in 1998. She is known for her pioneering articles on Greek tragedy and its reception, for her Green and Yellow edition of Sophocles Trachiniae (1982), a series for which she was general editor from its inception, and for the Cambridge Companion to Greek Tragedy (1997) and Cambridge History of Classical Literature (edited with E. J. Kenney). Two volumes of her collected papers were published this year by CUP. Pat was a much loved and inspirational teacher and wise mentor to generations of classicists.
