The Faculty of Classics is deeply saddened by the death of Brian Buckley, a dedicated friend, benefactor, and supporter of the Faculty and the University of Cambridge.
Brian studied Law at Jesus College, Cambridge from 1962 to 1965. Throughout his life, he demonstrated remarkable generosity and commitment to higher education, leaving a lasting mark across the University.
Supporting Postgraduate Talent in Classics
A cornerstone of Brian’s philanthropic support in Classics was his commitment to widening access and supporting postgraduate scholars. In memory of his late wife, Janis, he established the Brian and Janis Buckley Scholarships to help open the field of Classics to students of all backgrounds with talent and potential.
Through his kindness, the Faculty offers multiple Buckley Scholarships providing vital funding for students pursuing MPhil and PhD research in Classics. Awarded in conjunction with the Faculty of Classics and Jesus College, these awards assist postgraduate scholars with course fees and living maintenance, enabling exceptional applicants to advance their teaching and research in Cambridge regardless of financial background.
A Broad Legacy Across Cambridge
Brian’s broad intellectual curiosity and commitment to scholarship found expression across many fields. Beyond his transformational contributions to the Faculty of Classics, his philanthropy supported vital initiatives throughout the University, including generous contributions to the Centre for English Legal History and the Scott Polar Research Institute.
The Faculty offers its sincere condolences to Brian’s family at this sad time. We remain deeply grateful for his warm friendship and vision over many years. His legacy will continue to support future generations of classicists and resonate across the University for years to come.
