About
James is an ancient Greek historian and epigrapher focusing on ancient refugees, the non-elite, and broader Archaic-Hellenistic history. His doctoral thesis, completed at Oxford in 2026, focused on population expulsions and refugee crises in the Archaic-Classical Greek world, and especially examined the evidence produced by the expelled groups themselves in epigraphy, archaeology, and numismatics. James recently was the Macmillan-Rodewald Postdoctoral Student at the British School at Athens, where he pursued his postdoctoral work on population expulsions in the Hellenistic world, and currently is a Teaching Associate in Ancient History in the Faculty of Classics and Postdoctoral Research Associate at Trinity Hall. He is also an Assistant Editor of Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum, works on various epigraphic publications (including digital epigraphy) and numismatic work, and has participated in excavations and archaeological projects, most recently at Lyktos, Messene, Naxos, Samos, Olynthos, and Aphrodisias.
